Because we can’t see God, sometimes we place our faith in people, not realizing that He is the source of their power. Then, because we know people are flawed, sometimes we don’t follow the leaders that God gives us, because again we don’t recognize that it is not through their power that they lead us, but through God’s. So, when we follow them, we are not really following them, we are following the Lord. Ultimately, He is the only One with power and the One we should be serving.

As his first act as King, Saul organizes an army and defeats the Ammonites who have besieged one of the cities on the eastern side of the Jordan River. The people who always believed wanted to kill those who doubted Saul, but Saul doesn't blame them. He is a man after all, and God was only working through him. So, Saul wants the people to trust in God and not in him.

Samuel also reminds the people not to trust in their king, but in God. If they follow God, all will be well. If not, then their king will be useless to them

Saul
From the time God sent Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egypt, the Lord had appointed them leaders. Just before Moses died, God told him to anoint Joshua to succeed him. Then, after Joshua, God began raising up judges. But they wanted a king like every other nation. So, they asked Samuel to appoint one for them and Saul was the man God directed him to.
